After his death the town was renamed Hillsborough in his honor. The spelling was later simplified to Hillsboro. The first Post Office was established in 1850 and the town was officially incorporated in 1876. It was 1862 when John Ecles Murphy gathered a group of Christians to discuss the building of a church. A woman named Amanda Perkins had her house moved and a church building was erected on her property.
